Saltwater Fishing In Rhode Island
The state of Rhode Island has just 40 miles of general Atlantic shoreline, but those 40 miles make for a lot of great fishing. Narragansett Bay, Mt. Hope Bay, Rhode Island Sound, and Block Island Sound all provide wonderful inshore angling opportunities. Off the coast are some famous fishing sites, including George’s Bank, Nantucket Shoals, Cashes Ledge, and Stellwagen Bank. These areas contain submerged mountains and deep canyons – perfect for really big fish.
As with the states in the Northeast, striped bass are perhaps the most sought after fish of all. Stripers and fast and strong, putting up an impressive fight when hooked. They can also provide a great meal or two…or many! Some of the best striper fishing in the state can be found at the fort Adams seawall, Charlestown Beach, Wickford Harbor, and Allen Harbor, but these are but a few sites that provide excellent catches.
As Rhode Islands warm up with the coming of summer, the bluefish show up – in droves. They feed on the shad, mullet, menhaden, and anything else they can sink their mouths into. Because they’re such aggressive feeders, they strike a wide number of baits – both natural and artificial. Blues are fast swimmers and will make numerous runs before being landed. 10-pound fish are caught regularly, but the state record fish weighed 26 pounds.
Another warm weather favorite is the fluke, or summer flounder. These are flatfish that mostly inhabit the bottom, especially near structure. Fluke are among the most delicious fish available anywhere, and they can be challenging to land. The state record was a 17.5-pound doormat. If you’d like to catch your limit, contact a Rhode Island charter fishing boat or guide.
