Fort Lauderdale Fishing on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

A nice breeze out of the east southeast at 5-7 mph here in Fort Lauderdale FL and seas from 1-2 ft in height. Mr. Richard Weiss and family from Rhode Island planned on a vacation in Fort Lauderdale FL which incorporated a deep sea fishing charter on the Happy Day Today Topshot Fishing. His two boys, Michael, 8 years old, and Robert, 13 years old, were looking forward to doing some deep sea fishing.

As we were pulling out of the marina, a good school of Mullet was swimming in front of the boat. Mitch, our mate, gathered his casting net and made a throw catching seven live Mullets, which I planned to use later in our fishing charter.

As we were heading out of the inlet, Mitch set up two plainers with a pink sea witch and Bonitos strip on one and a blue and white sea witch with a Bonitos strip on the other, and with two Ballyhoos and two Bonitos strips for surface baits. I started off in 120 feet of water off the sea buoy in Fort Lauderdale FL trolling to the north to one of my favorite wrecks sitting in 204 feet of water. This artificial wreck has been in this location since 1984 and houses a variety of different fish.

With plainer rods down, our first bite came from surface Ballyhoo bait and it was a 16 lb. Bonito caught by Michael. After both boys caught a mixed bag of Bonitos, King fish and Black Fin Tunas, it was time to make a drop with the live Mullet over our artificial wreck. Watching the rod tip from being still to an erratic movement, let us know that there was a predator chasing the live Mullet. With rod bent over, Richard, the father, positioned himself in the fighting chair to do battle with an Amberjack. Fifteen minutes into the battle, a 40 lb Amberjack surfaced behind the boat. Mitch grabbed the leader and put the fish in the boat. Pictures were taken and thereafter the Amberjack was released into the waters. With both boys helping out their mother on the next strike, a 35 lb Amberjack was brought to the boat – again pictures were taken and the fish was released.

It was time to start heading back from our deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale FL to the dock at Bahia Mar. This ends another successful and adventurous deep sea fishing charter on the Happy Day Today/Topshot Fishing with Captain Zsak.
