October and November are the best months for Sea Trout and Redfish in our area. Two things can slow the action, weather and high tides. The tides through October 12th will be exceptionally high. Our normal tide highes is about seven feet, tides will be over nine feet a couple of days this coming week and well into the eights several days. Trout and river Reds (smaller Redfish) feed very little during high tides, but Bull Reds (mature Redfish) are not affected as much.
One thing you can do to improve your chances is to fish the change of the tides. The current slows two hours on either side of the change and stops briefly at the change. The water also clears somewhat during the last of the flood and first of the ebb. Bull Reds also move into flooded marsh on the top of the tide and can be seen “tailing”. This is one of the few sight fishing opportunity’s in our area.
The good news is that beginning October 13th fishing should be very good. Trout and Reds that have not actively feed for 10 days or so will be gorging themselves on shrimp and minnows.
High tides do not affect the Dolphins and bird life. Join us for a leisurely tour cruising the bays, waterways and tidal creeks surrounding Jekyll Island. Enjoy the natural beauty of the Golden Isles. View never ending expanses of salt marsh flats dotted with Wood Storks, Blue Heron, and White Egret. Watch Ospreys soaring overhead and Pelicans diving for a meal. Extent your trip and go to Cumberland and Little Cumberland Islands. See the Little Cumberland Lighthouse, the tallest sand dunes on the east coast and the wild horses left by the conquistadors centuries ago.
