Ft Lauderdale catching sails out of kite and big Jacks on ship wrecks

Jan 29

Today we started out fishing with Ric and his brother Dennis the lobster fisherman from up in the northeast part of the country and their good friend Steve the Navy guy from Florida.
We started out trolling the reef but the kings were just not biting today so it was time for plane B.
In came the trolling gear and out went our two kites with 2 live baits suspended from each kite.
The goal was to catch Ric a sailfish. He had been on boats before and had seen others catch sails but he had never gotten the chance to do battle with a sail himself.
Ok so the kites were set and all the baits were in position and the trap was set all we were missing was for a hungry sail to come along and have a little lunch.
All of a sudden up popped a sailfish and he was all over our right long kite bait. Within seconds of seeing this sail we were Hooked Up.
Ric jumped in the chair and the fight was on. At first Ric’s sail was jumping and dancing all over the surface of the waves but then he just took off and before we knew it we were running low on line. It was time to chase this sea monster down. After a good 25 min of this back and forth tug a war Ric finally got his fish next to the boat.

We intended to get a quick measurement and a couple photos and release this BIG sailfish to fight again another day but I am sorry to say that the hook was wrapped up in his gills and the fish just was not going to make it.
I’ve want to take a second to say that aboard the Hooked Up it is our intention to release these fish back into the sea to fight again another day but some of these fish do get hurt so we do make sure that they do not go to waste and they do get smoked and eaten.
Ric, Steve and Dennis thanks again for fishing with us aboard the Hooked Up and Ric way to go on your sailfish!
One last note I did not spell Ric’s name wrong that’s just the way he spells it.

Today we had a shared charter with Gale from New Jersey and Robert from Cleveland.
We started out trolling but once again trolling was on the slow side today.
So once again it was time to use some of our local knowledge and try so deep-water wreck fishing.
Well as it turned out we had made the right decision because the wreck fishing was red-hot.
Each of our anglers caught a couple of BIG amber jacks and one of Gail’s Jacks was a big 70 pounder. That one did not get released back into the sea as it turned out Gail is having that big trophy put on his wall.
Guy’s thanks again for fishing with us aboard the Hooked Up and Gail we are looking forward to fishing with you again in a couple of days.

Ok so today we did not get everyone’s names but I know we had grand mom and granddad and their daughter Tracy and her two sons Josh and Brendan from Washington D.C.
We trolled our way to the south trying to get to a couple of shipwrecks that lay in about 110 feet of water off the coast of North Miami Florida.
As it turned out trolling was slow and we never did catch any fish trolling the reef however once we got to the wrecks things took a turn for the better.
Josh caught a big amber jack

Brendan caught a big barracuda

Tracy caught another big amber jack
Guy’s thanks again for fishing with us aboard the Hooked Up.

Captain's Bio: My name is Taco and I run the best Fort Lauderdale fishing charter in South Florida! Heck, you won't have a better time on any fishing boat from West Palm to Miami. Why, because you get a sport fishing captain who has fished the waters of Fort Lauderdale for over 25 years. I know where to fish and how to fish for sailfish, marlin, tuna, dolphin, barracuda and just about anything that has gills. You also get a great time fishing with Hooked Up. We're not one of those stuffy South Florida fishing charters where the mate and captain are stuck on themselves and barely talk to you. We want you to party, relax, or whatever you like to do. Our job is to make your time on Hooked Up the most enjoyable you can have in Ft Lauderdale.
