Fort Lauderdale Fishing on Happy Day Today with Capt. Zsak

Winds out of the east northeast, 7-12 mph, 3 ft. seas and the blue water pushed into the 2nd reef off of Fort Lauderdale FL. Mr. Allen Weiss and friend, Susan, from Washington D.C. chartered the Happy Day Today Topshot Fishing to do some deep sea fishing off of Fort Lauderdale FL.

Blue water moved in to 60 ft. of water from the east due to the northeast breeze. With a north current at 2 ½ knots and multiple showers of bait fish, I knew this would be a good day to pull two Ballyhoo dredge teasers. Our surface baits consisted of five Ballyhoos, two with pink and blue skirts and the other three natural with 1/8 ounce chin leads. I trolled across the second reef which is in 60 ft. of water, pass the third reef out to 180 ft. of water and repeated this pattern back and forth. Picking away at Bonitos from 5-12 lbs. and Black Fin Tunas from 5-8 lbs., I knew eventually a Sailfish would pop up.

As I headed towards one of the 36 artificial reefs we have off of Fort Lauderdale FL that sits in 150 ft. of water, I could see the shower of bait fish a bit inside of the wreck. We circled the wreck, the right rigger came down, screamed off line and a fish jumped out of the water in the glare of the sun. As Allen reeled in the fish, I could see that it was a 4 ft. Barracuda. Mitch, our mate, lifted the fish out of the water for picture taking and then released the estimated 30 lb. Barracuda. As I trolled back to the sea buoy off of Fort Lauderdale FL in 90 ft. of water, finally “he” made his appearance – “Sailfish, left long”. His bill was out of the water swatting back and forth at the Ballyhoo – the Sailfish ate the Ballyhoo and the line screamed off the Shimano reel. After 20 minutes, Allen, the angler, retrieved the line, and Mitch leaned over the side to grab the leader. Pictures were taken and the Sailfish was released to fight again.

With a happy angler and a good catch of fish on the charter boat Happy Day Today Topshot Fishing, it was time to start heading back from our deep sea fishing in Fort Lauderdale FL to the dock at Bahia Mar.
