Fort Lauderdale Fishing for charter boat Happy Day Today, Saltwater Fishing Report

This morning in South Florida Ft. Lauderdale winds were out of the west at 5-12 mph - seas were running 2-3 ft., blue indigo waters pushed into the Ft. Lauderdale Beach with a very fast north current at 3.4 knots. John Dooer and his friend Mike were on an AT&T convention from Virginia and decided to do a deep sea salt water fishing charter with the Happy Day Today in Ft. Lauderdale South Florida.

The chosen target was the Atlantic Sailfish – these beautiful, magnificent, pelagic creatures are noted for their spectacular aerobatics and neon colors. The most productive way to catch Sailfish this time of year is on live bait, preferably Goggle Eyes, one of the hardiest baits you could use for fishing - basically, they swim till they get eaten. The method of fishing is from either flying two kites or pulling live baits from riggers.

With our current screaming to the north, we headed south off of Ft. Lauderdale, to set the kites up. Our winds swung around and now it was out of the north northeast, which gave us a fantastic indigo blue to a clean green edge water. Mitch, our mate, set up our kites with two Goggle Eyes from each kite and one from the outrigger with a half ounce lead on it.

Mitch yelled that the Sailfish was on the right short kite bait!! With its dorsal fin out of the water, circling the last couple of seconds of the Goggle Eye’s live, he inhaled the bait - screaming line off, heading to the south and entangling the left short and long kite baits as he headed south of Ft. Lauderdale. We will be lucky if we get out of this Chinese fire drill!!! Mitch worked frantically to untangle the other lines while the angler, John, fought the Sailfish. Doing a great job, Mitch pulled another rabbit out of the hat. Mitch grabbed a hold of the leader, we took pictures of the fish in the water and released it. The Sailfish are moving thru quickly so we set up again and immediately another Sailfish popped up on the right long. After a half hour battle, this fish decided to swim north off of Ft. Lauderdale, and Michael, our angler, did a great job reeling in his Sailfish. Pictures were taken once more and the Sailfish was released to fight again.

It was time to start heading back to the dock at Bahia Mar, Fort Lauderdale South Florida. This ends another successful and adventurous deep sea fishing excursion on the Happy Day Today with Captain Zsak.
