Freshwater Fishing In Texas
Everything’s bigger in Texas, right? Many of the state’s anglers would say so. The Lone Star State is rich in fishing waters that provide great fishing, and some large specimens can be found. For example, the largemouth fish grow big and fat here. The largest ever caught weighed in at a whopping 18.18 pounds, making it the third largest state record bass in the U.S., behind California and Georgia. The Texas brute was landed in Lake Fork, but many lakes in the state provide great bass action. Cooper Lake, Eagle Mountain Lake, Lake Worth, Proctor Lake, Lake Limestone, and Lake Arrowhead are just a few.
Smallies are a favored target, also. The state record smallmouth bass was caught in Lake Meredith and weighed almost 8 pounds. Other spots that provide great smallie action include the Brazos River, Lake Whitney, Possum Kingdom Lake, Canyon Lake, Stillhouse Hollow Lake, and Lake Bridgeport.
The best place to land a trout in Texas is the Guadalupe River, which is where the state record rainbow, brook, and brown trout were landed. Other places to do some Texas trout fishing include Elder Lake, the Atascosa River, Kitty hollow Lake, the Frio River, Lake Corpus Christi, and Nolan Creek.
Some decent walleye can be found in Texas waters, too. The state record fish weighed 11 pounds, 14 ounces and was pulled from Lake Meredith. Other places to land walleye include white River Reservoir and Palo Duro Reservoir.
