Freshwater Fishing In Oklahoma
Geographically speaking, Oklahoma is one of the most diverse of all fifty U.S. states. It includes high plains, the Wichita Mountains, mesas, rocky canyons, forests, and wetlands. It also has lots of freshwater – 1,231 square miles of water, to be exact. This includes rivers, streams, large lakes and reservoirs, and small private ponds. Fortunately for the state’s anglers, all that water means plenty of great fishing!
The most sought after fish in the Sooner State is the largemouth bass. This shouldn’t surprise anyone, since the state has a relatively mild climate and a good supply of warmer waters. Oklahoma bass get pretty darn big. The state record largemouth weighed 14 pounds, 11 ounces and was pulled from Broken Bow Lake. The state record smallie, at 7 pounds, 12 ounces was caught in Lake Eufaula.
Bass aren’t the only Sooner fish stars, however. Walleye can be found in numerous lakes and reservoirs, and crappie and catfish are just about everywhere there’s water. Big stripers can be found in several lakes and rivers, too. Trout can be found in Lake Carl Etling, Clayton Lake, Tenkiller Lake, and in the Illinois, Blue, and Mountain Fork Rivers.

 | Oklahoma Fishing Lakes
Lake Eufaula – This lake is in east-central Oklahoma and measures 100,000 acres. It has everything a fish could ask for – shallows, brush, deep channels, rocky points, and rock shelves. Most anglers come to this lake for the largemouth action, but the fishing is also great for smallies, spotted bass, crappie, and huge catfish. There are several marinas on the lake, and fishing guides are available.
Lake Texoma – On the Red River in southern Oklahoma, on the border with Texas, is this 74,686-acre lake. In some places, the depth is 100 feet, and the water is clear. This is considered one of the best fishing spots in both states, partly because of the abundant food supply - shad. Many fishermen come here to catch big stripers, but the lake also has largemouth and smallmouth bass, sand bass, hybrid striped bass, crappie, and catfish. Bass fishing guides can be found in both states.
Grand Lake of the Cherokees – This 46,000-acre lake is in the northeast corner of Oklahoma and provides great bass fishing. In fact, many Oklahoma anglers consider it the best bass lake in the state for largemouths. Structure includes docks, ledges, rocks, and creek mouths. Smallies and spotted bass can also be caught. Professional fishing guides who specialize in this lake are available.
Broken Bow Reservoir – In the southeastern corner of the state is Broken Bow, a 14,220-acre reservoir of clear, beautiful water. It’s a haven for bass fishermen, with good catches of largemouths, smallies, spotted, and sand bass. The walleye fishing here is great, too. Hire one of the lake’s bass fishing guides for the best experience.
