The state of Ohio has numerous bodies of freshwater. In fact, even the name “Ohio” is based on the Iroquois word for “great river.” The Buckeye state is bordered on the north and south by water. On the north, Ohio has 312 miles of coastline on Lake Erie, and to the south, Ohio’s border is defined by the Ohio River. In addition, the state has the Great Miami River, the Maumee River, the Cuyahoga River, the Scioto River, and the Muskingum River. Add to all these rivers numerous lakes, reservoirs, ponds, and streams, and it’s evident that Ohio is well blessed with freshwater. As a result, fishing is a favorite pastime in the state, no matter what the season. When the ponds and lakes freeze over in the depths of winter, Ohio anglers turn to ice fishing to satisfy their habit.
Some of the most popular angling targets in Ohio are largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, trout, salmon, striped bass, crappie, walleye, yellow perch, catfish, bluegill, rock bass, hybrid sunfish, northern pike, sauger, saugeye, musky, tiger musky, and pickerel. |

Lake Erie Fishing, Fishing Spots in Ohio

|
 | Lake Erie – This gigantic lake has to rate at the very top of the list. As evidence, just take a look at the Ohio state record fish that were landed in Lake Erie: a smallmouth bass at 9.5 pounds, a burbot at 17.33 pounds, a yellow perch at 2.75 pounds, a Chinook salmon at 29.5 pounds, a brown trout at 14.65 pounds, a lake trout at 20.49 pounds, a steelhead trout at 21.3 pounds, and a walleye at 16.19 pounds. Imagine having a boat full of fish like that! To effectively fish this big water, you’ll need to contact Lake Erie charter boats or Lake Erie fishing guides.
Burr Oak Lake – This 628-acre lake is located in the southeastern part of the state. It’s an older manmade lake, created by damming the east fork of Sunday Creek. It’s one of the best lakes in Ohio for largemouth bass fishing. Studies show that almost half the bass in the lake measure at least fifteen inches long, with some 6-pounders thrown in, too. This reservoir has stumps, coves, submerged logs, docks, rocks, and shallows. Other fishes to catch include saugeye, white crappie, and channel catfish. Marinas, boat ramps, and boat rentals are all available. Even though Burr Oak isn’t huge, it’s tough to fish. A fishing guide who’s familiar with the lake would be a good investment.
Pymatuning Lake – Located in eastern Ohio, this lake covers 14,600 acres and spans parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania. This large reservoir provides some of the best walleye fishing in the state, and bass, crappie, and channel cats are also plentiful. Boat ramps, boat rentals, and fishing guides are available.
West Branch Lake – If you’re after a trophy striper, head to this 2,300-acre lake in northeastern Ohio. The state record fish was landed here, weighing in at 37 pounds, 1 ounce. The lake also provides fishing for walleye, bass, and crappie. |
