Freshwater Fishing In Nevada
You might think of Nevada as just a desert state. There are, however, numerous lakes and reservoirs here, including some huge bodies of water. There are also rivers and streams, and fishing is great year round.
Bass fishing is very popular in the state, and both largemouth and smallmouth bass are available, especially in southern Nevada. The state record largemouth bass weighed twelve pounds and was landed in Lake Mead. The largest smallmouth on record weighed just over five pounds. Some large striped bass can also be caught, like the 60-pound bruiser that was pulled from Lake Mohave and still stands as the state record.
Trout fishing is also popular in Nevada, with several species available. These include lake trout, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, bull trout, hybrid trout, golden trout, and tiger trout. Among the best places to fish for trout are Cave Lake, Lake Mead, the Jarbridge River, Lake Mohave, Pyramid Lake, East Walker River, Hot Creek, Reese River, and numerous streams in northern Nevada. Trout fishing guides can take you to remote streams where there is little fishing pressure.
Salmon fishing is mostly limited to Lake Tahoe, where the state record kokanee was caught, and to Lake Mead, where the state record Coho salmon was caught.
Other popular finned species in the state that are targeted by anglers include walleye, crappie, catfish, bluegill, redear sunfish, green sunfish, and yellow perch.

 | Major Fishing Lakes And Reservoirs In Nevada
Lake Mead Located in southeastern Nevada, Lake Mead covers 160,000 acres. This is a great place to land a largemouth bass, or to catch a big striper in the 40-pound range. The lake is open all year, with great year round fishing. In the winter, fish for striped bass and crappie. In the spring, the bluegill and largemouth bass begin to bite, and in the summer, bass, bream, and catfish angling will be at its peak. In the autumn months, the bass bite until the temperature really drops, and stripers can be found in some of the shallow coves. Lake Mead fishing guides know where all the hot spots are.
Lake Tahoe Tahoe is on the western Nevada border and covers 123,000 acres. Nevada shares Tahoe with California. This is a clear, beautiful lake and gets many visitors each year, along with an average of 300 days of sunshine. It provides great fishing for kokanee salmon and for large lake trout. Other desirable fish in the lake include largemouth bass, whitefish, catfish, and sunfish. Lake Tahoe charter boats and fishing guides are available.
Pyramid Lake In west-central Nevada is Pyramid Lake, a 120,000-acre body of water. If you want to catch a big cutthroat trout, this is the place to fish. The lake can be tough to fish, so its best to book a fishing charter or a professional fishing guide.
Wild Horse Reservoir This reservoir is in north-central Nevada and contains 2,800 acres. The lake provides good fishing for brown trout, smallmouth bass, and catfish, but the biggest stars with anglers here are the rainbow trout and the yellow perch.
