Maryland Fishing, Fishing Guides in Maryland

The state of Maryland encompasses a rich and varied geography. In fact, it’s like a microcosm of the United States, in general, as far as landscapes go. It has mountains, rolling hills, marshlands, and rivers, each with its own individual habitats. Outdoor activities are popular, and fishing is at or near the top of the list. Maryland has great fishing from the mountains to the Chesapeake Bay, and while it is difficult to ignore that the Chesapeake Bay fishing is the major tourism draw for anglers the mountains also attract visitors for campning, hunting, and yes Maryland fishing.

Most savvy anglers and Maryland fishing guides are aware of the wonderful fishing offered by Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay, but if you overlook the state’s freshwater fishing opportunities, you’re really missing out on some great angling. Even though the state has no natural lakes, it’s dotted with manmade lakes, reservoirs, ponds, and trout streams. While saltwater fishing in Maryland over shadows freshwater there are excellent Maryland bass fishing opportunities and Maryland bass fishing guides to guide you on any fishing trip in search of freshwater bass, of the largemouth or smallmouth variety.

Deep Creek Lake – The largest lake in Maryland, Deep Creek covers almost 4,000 acres and has 69 miles of shore. This western Maryland lake has healthy populations of both largemouth and smallmouth bass, including a good number of fish over five pounds. Deep Creek has numerous coves, shallow areas, submerged weeds, and deep points. Boat ramps, piers, boat slips, and fishing guides can all be found at the lake.

Liberty Reservoir – Located in the north-central section of the state, Liberty Reservoir covers 3,100 acres. The lake is fed by the Patapsco River, Morgan Run, Beaver Run, and other tributaries. Bass fishing for largemouths and smallmouths here is great, including some trophy-size fish. In fact, the state record smallie was caught here and weighed in at 8 pounds, 4 ounces. The lake was stocked with striped bass in the early 1980s, and there are numerous fish that now weigh over 40 pounds.

Rocky Gorge Reservoir – In central Maryland is 770-acre Rocky Gorge Reservoir. There are several rocky outcrops along the shore, along with submerged rocks and logs that provide cover and food for bass. This is a great place to do some largemouth bass fishing in Maryland.

Prettyboy Reservoir – This 1,500-acre lake is located in the north-central section of Maryland and has a good supply of largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. This lake has clean water and submerged logs that border deep water, where bass often seek cover.

Centennial Lake – Centennial Lake covers 50 acres and provides an abundance of largemouth bass. In fact, there are too many largemouths in the lake. As a result, most of the bass caught are on the small side, although there are good numbers of fish that measure over a foot long. Larger bass, at almost seven pounds, are also in the lake.

Trout Fishing in Maryland

Another freshwater fish that gets a lot of attention from Maryland anglers is the trout. These include the rainbow, the cutthroat, the brook, and the brown. The Potomac River provides excellent fishing for cutthroat, brookies, and browns, and in fact, holds the state records for these three species. The largest rainbow ever recorded in Maryland weighed 14 pounds, 3 ounces and was landed in the Savage River Reservoir.

For the best angling results in Maryland, hire a Maryland fishing guide who is familiar with the local waters.
