Louisiana Bass Fishing Lakes and Hot Spots

Toledo Bend – This lake on the Louisiana-Texas border covers 186,000 acres and has almost 1,300 miles of shoreline. At least two largemouth bass weighing over 15 pounds each have been taken here. “The Bend” contains deep channels, points, submerged brush, drop-offs, and shallow flats, making it challenging to fish, but the effort is worth it. Bayou Dorcheat – Located in northwestern Louisiana, this is a 122-mile stream that begins in Arkansas and empties into Lake Bistineau. In the 1800s, Dorcheat saw a fair amount of boat traffic, and numerous wrecks lie on the bottom, creating structure and habitat for fish. This is an amazingly beautiful area, and the bass fishing is good, but there are mercury warnings about consuming fish caught here. Of course, there’s always catch and release! Caney Creek Reservoir – This is a 5,200-acre lake located in north-central Louisiana. The lake has free boat launches, a marina, shallow flats, and lots of submerged structure off the main channel. 16 of the 20 largest bass ever caught in the Bayou State were landed in this reservoir. Caney has lots of channels, points, drop-offs, and artificial reefs, which are marked with buoys.

Cross Lake – Near Shreveport, Cross Lake covers 8,575 acres and is listed as a Louisiana Quality Lake. The water is very clean, and the lake has two public parks and several access points. Cross Lake supports a healthy bass population and is a beautiful place to fish.

Lake Cataouatche – This lake is part of Bayou Segnette in southern Louisiana. Several years ago, Florida largemouth were added to the lake, and these fish have thrived. Large bass are not uncommon, including some 10-pounders. Flooded timber and cypress stumps cover the bottom in some areas. Lots of grass and hydrilla attracts bass in the warmer months, and there’s a huge population of smaller fish. Deep holes in the northern part of the lake often hold bass in cold weather.

Lake Salvador – This 53,000-acre lake is located in southeastern Louisiana. It’s located just south of Lake Cataouatche, and like that lake, it provides great fishing for largemouth bass. The west shore of the lake has numerous points that bass love, especially in the fall months.
