Alabama offers freshwater anglers plenty of great opportunities including numerous Alabama fishing guides to help show you the way to the best fishing in Alabama.
The state has numerous large reservoirs that are open to the public. In all, there are 23 public fishing lakes, all of which are managed by the state. Of all the freshwater fish species available, the largemouth bass is king. Like most of the other Southeastern states, Alabama has just the right growing conditions to produce lunker bass, and the largest ever caught in the state weighed in at 16 pounds, 8 ounces.
Best Alabama Bass Fishing Lakes
Lake Guntersville, in northern Alabama, is the largest lake in the state, at almost 70,000 acres. It has a healthy bass population that attracts several bass club tournaments each year. According to Southern Sporting Journal, Guntersville is one of the top six lakes in the nation for winter largemouth bass fishing. Because the lake is so huge, you’ll do best to hire a bass fishing guide to help you locate the “hot spots.”
Aliceville Reservoir is located in southwest Alabama. Consisting of 8,300 acres, the lake makes up in numbers of healthy bass what it lacks in size. Numerous largemouth bass weighing over five pounds are regularly caught, especially in the early spring. Aliceville doesn’t get a lot of fishing pressure, either, which will increase your chances of landing a “hawg.”
Wilson Lake, in northern Alabama, covers over 15,000 acres. This TVA lake has no minimum size limit on largemouth bass, and it rates high with experienced bass anglers. Several professional bass fishing guides are available for hire on the reservoir.
Lake Martin, in the central part of the state, consists of 39,180 acres and around 700 miles of shoreline. Largemouth bass here are on the smallish size, but you’ll have an excellent chance of success as far as numbers go. Fishing here is a challenge because of the clear water, but you’ll enjoy the beauty of the lake. The northernmost areas of Lake Martin are the most fertile. Night fishing and cool-weather angling are often the most productive. |
