The Hawkeye State produces some hefty bass. The state record largemouth was caught in Lake Fisher and weighed 10 pounds, 14 ounces. Iowa has some beautiful trout streams, where rainbows, brookies, and brown trout can be found. Numerous Iowa fly fishing guides can take you to fish these lovely trout waters. One such stream is the Little Turkey River, in the northeastern part of the state. This is a quiet stream that receives regular stockings of brown trout.

For rainbows and brook trout, along with wild brown trout, try Richmond Springs, located in Backbone State Park. This is a beautiful area with easy access. Catchable-size ‘bows and brookies are stocked every week.

Even though the state record rainbow was landed here, French Creek is one of the best places to fish for wild brown trout and wild brook trout. In the lower reaches of the stream, there about 2,500 brown trout for every mile of water. Most of French Creek is located inside a wildlife management area, and the water quality is excellent.

Fountain Springs Creek, in Fountain Creek Park, supplied the 7-pound state record brook trout. Catchable-size brookies and rainbows are stocked weekly, and the stream also supports brown trout.

The Maquoketa River is one of the largest trout streams in the state and provides good fishing for rainbow, brook, and brown trout. All three trout species are stocked on a bi-weekly basis.

Coldwater Creek, near Bluffton, is one of the most beautiful streams in Iowa and has easy access. ‘Bows and browns reproduce naturally here, which is pretty rare for Iowa trout streams. The natural trout population is augmented by regular stockings.
