The weather has not been favorable for Spring Redfish here in Orange Beach, Alabama until this week. We have had 62 degree water temps and Southeast winds. The weather finally has broken into a Spring pattern and the baitfish are showing up a little closer to shore. We are starting to see blood minnows balling up and seagulls and pelicans staying close by. We have had our best bite later in the morning until later in the afternoon. The full moon did slow the bite, but the redfish are biting better now. We have been trolling mostly for reds but we are starting to catch a few spanish mackerel in close. Offshore fishing has been good but the red snapper that the national marine fisheries say are not there are eating everything we put in the water. Amberjacks and grouper have been caught on 10 and 12 hour trips. Vermilion and white snapper seem to be the staple fish right now. Triggerfish are doing ok. We have the World Championship Saltwater Series Tournament that begins on April 4 and runs through May 26, 2008. There is over $150,000 in prizes available. The first place king mackerel pays $20,000.00. Anyway, We are excited about the 2008 fishing season. Bookings are way up even though fuel prices are a big concern. |
