I hit the water this morning at 3:30 am I had a few bunker that Captain Mike of SunBum Charters left for me in my cooler. I ran out to the harbor, Put on a head and started to get my gill net ready. with in 5 mins the rod went off. 1st keeper striper of the year. did all the same again and a couple of mins later another keeper. Now I was going to need more bunker so I let the net out. within minutes I had about a dozen bunker in the net. So time to fish again. About 15 mins later and about 5 short runs I get another fish. Now the Sun was starting to move up. I wanted to scout another spot in very shallow water. It was hard leaving that spot with fish biting but I wanted to get an Idea on how these fish are moving. I made about a 10 minute run to a shallow rip. I pulled out the leadcore setups and put chunks on each of them. The tide was ripping hard so I let out 3 colors and put them in the rod holders. with in 5 minutes I had doubles on. I ended up losing one of them but the one I landed was 38 inches and 19 pounds. The action stayed pretty hot until the sky lite up and then It became all bluefish. The total for the morning was 7 Bass from 32-38 inches and about 15 bluefish in the 4-8 pound range. 4 of the Bass were taken on leadcore line in 7 feet of water. Captain Mike and Bill showed up about 5:30 and was able to hit a few for themselves .
The surface temp was 53 this morning.
It turned out to be a very good first striper trip of the season.
