Species - Atlantic Thread Herring
Scientific Name - (Opisthonema ogliman)
Physical Description - Similar to the Pilchard but with a deeper body and larger eye. Also easily distinguished by the elongated, threadlike posterior ray of the dorsal fin. Dark spot behind gill cover. Bluish above, silvery on sides and belly. The scales along the back have dark centers, forming longitudinal streaks, and there is a faint dark spot just behind the upper margin of the gill cover; the dorsal and caudal fins have black tips. Body color silvery with a dark shoulder spot: sharp keel on the belly (bony scutes); no teeth; gill rakers long, filamentous; last dorsal fin ray elongate; anterior edge of the shoulder girdle under the gill cover bi-lobed. Large schools of this silvery baitfish are common at the surface from Cape Cod to Brazil.
Range - Widespread in Florida. Atlantic coast of America in tropical and subtropical latitudes, south to Brazil, straying northward to Chesapeake Bay, and occasionally as far as southern Massachusetts.
Habitat - Both inshore and offshore waters.
